A controlled environmental impact

We live among our own vines. Managing our environmental impact is therefore not merely a concept : it is a lifestyle choice for our family and for generations of winemakers to come.

A COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Château Fleur Cardinale has been implementing the Bordeaux Wines Environmental Management System since 2013. This framework is based on the ISO 14001 standard, which addresses the impacts of businesses on their environment in terms of energy and water consumption, sorting waste, effluents, recycling waste, cultivation methods, combatting pests, and employee health and safety.

PRECISE NATURAL FERTILIZATION

We do not burn the freshly cut vine prunings in winter, preferring to chip them and use them as a soil conditioner, thereby reducing our total input of amendments. These amendments are certified as organic and are only introduced to compensate for what the vines use up in the year. They are added in carefully measured quantities on certain parcels after thorough monitoring of the vigour of the vine’s growth with a drone. Also, the cultivation of cover crops, again according to the needs of each parcel, provides nutrition for the vines, which since 2017 we have no longer had to supply in the form of organic fertilisers.

LIVING SOIL

We use no chemical weedkillers and have tilled our vines mechanically for many years. The use of cover crops on all our parcels also reduces erosion and naturally decompacts the soil, which we no longer have to do by machine. The cover crops also improve the soil’s porosity and bearing capacity.

ADVANCED BIOCONTROL STRATEGY

Our disease control measures are strictly preventive and mainly consist of biocontrol products. For example, we use talc-based sprays, which have a drying effect that is effective against botrytis in wet years.

OUR ZERO EFFLUENT DISCHARGE POLICY

Our washing area enables us to recover all our vineyard and winery effluents and from the oil separator tank, which are then processed by specialist collection services.

CONTROLLED ENERGY SPENDING

As a general rule, all our new equipment and machinery is selected for high energy performance and low carbon footprint. Our new vathouse will therefore be equipped with stainless steel truncated cone-shaped tanks fitted with twin skins and heat regulation systems. This “thermos” effect produces great heat inertia and will contribute significantly to energy savings.

IMPROVED WATER MANAGEMENT

A rainwater capture system provides water to irrigate the landscaped terrace above the new cellar. The glossy annealed stainless steel used to make our new tanks, will be easier to wash and therefore contribute to substantially reducing the quantities of water required.
