Surf Session Collector’s Edition
“ROLL OUT THE 2019 BARREL”
A Collector’s Edition #2
where Wine and Surf share common values
This edition is the next in our series of collector editions, begun last year with the release of our Hard Rock edition. The idea remains the same, which is to develop the Château Fleur Cardinale label in the context of a different, contrasting world, while maintaining the identity codes of the original label.
For this 2019 vintage, the Château Fleur Cardinale’s family knight heads off to take on the Hawaiian waves in our “Surf Session” Collector Edition.
Surfing offers a number of parallels with wine-growing. They share similar values. Both vignerons and surfers have a humble respect for nature; both are able to adapt and to stay patient. They both seize the moment, and also share the same sensitive concern about preserving the eco-systems.
Another thing that connects them is the word “barrel”. For surfers it describes the roller formed by the wave which carries them along on its crest for several unique thrilling moments; while for vignerons it is the object in which the new vintage is kept to age over several months.
This Surf Session Collector Edition has been released for the 2019, a vintage which can be described as the ideal wave –one that will only ever come along once.
This 2019 is unique, the result of a year of extreme weather conditions, beginning with frost at the beginning of May, followed by a hot and very dry summer, and then completed by optimal conditions during the harvesting of the grapes. The vigneron in this vintage could be compared to the surfer seeking to tame the natural power of the wave, standing on his board in a supple posture with perfect control of his balance.
An original design, created by Lisa Wieland,
with very subtly incorporated details
Only 1,500 magnums carry this one-off label. They have been numbered by hand and presented in a specially screen-printed single wooden case. Surfers can enjoy finding the graphical codes that are special to their world and which are very subtly incorporated within the original classic coat of arms on the label.
The graphic design is the work of Lisa Wieland from Bordeaux : freelance graphic designer, art director and a regular lecturer at several design, marketing and communication schools. Coming from a family of creative advertisers in London, she grew up in the middle of the Andalusian mountains, before coming to the South-West of France some thirty years ago. For the past 15 years, she has been developing communication, design, visual identity and publishing projects.
“When you create a special edition of a wine label as we did last year with the “Hard Rock” collector’s edition, you’re already quite far away from the traditional wine codes people are used to – it’s a real breath of fresh air! This second Fleur Cardinale “special” edition is even more special when you realise that a new collection is in the making, and the potential for developing it becomes greater the more we invest in it. With Fleur Cardinale, that potential is like a bottomless pit, and that’s one of the reasons I get so much inspiration and motivation from our working together. Together we develop strong, aesthetic, original visuals whilst breaking the habits of a world where tradition and standards still carry a lot of weight. We create a bridge between what is and what can be. This brings me great pleasure.”
The work is meticulous and well thought-out – we give tremendous attention to detail, whilst remaining relaxed and playful overall. The passion we both have for doing the absolute best job we can on everything is probably part of what makes this partnership such a success.

Surfrider Foundation Europe
& IdealWine
In order to complete the success of this project, Château Fleur Cardinale is collaborating with professional surfer Vincent Duvignac, who won the French Open Champion (2009, 2011, 2016), European ESF Champion (2009, 2013) , and the World Championships with the French Surfing Team (2017). Vincent Duvignac will take on the waves of the Landes coastline during a surfing session using a surfboard which displays the colours of the Surf Session Edition and which was specially shaped by surfing entrepreneur Damien Marly of Chipiron Surfboards (Hossegor).
This surfboard, together with a collector’s case, will then be sold at an auction on Idealwine, and the proceeds of the sale will be donated to the Surfrider Foundation.
These encounters, experiences and sharing of values help showcase the commitment of Caroline and Ludovic Decoster to the protection of the environment.
