Weather conditions

The first months of the year were very rainy.

Flowering took place well, during a favorable window.

Ideal conditions in July gave rise to a quick and consistent veraison.

The month of August was particularly dry.

A saving rain revived the vines in mid-September.

The 2016 Croix Cardinale, a blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc, felt exotic on the nose, touch of meat juices percolating through the ripe black fruit. The palate is ripe and sweet on the entry, but underneath there are fine tannin and that Cabernet Franc component lends a lovely bell pepper touch, notwithstanding impressive structure and length. Le nez est fruité et offre une fine richesse ainsi que de la gourmandise. On y retrouve de fines notes de fraise fraiche/mure, de myrtille fraiche/mure et de groseille fraiche/mure associées à de fines notes de chocolat noir, d’épices ainsi qu’à de très fines pointes de Sichuan et à une très discrète pointe de fleurs (en fond). La bouche est fruitée et offre du gras, de la rondeur, une bonne structure, de la richesse, de la tension ainsi qu’une fine gourmandise. En bouche ce vin exprime des notes fraise fraiche/mure, de mûre fraiche/mure et de fines notes de salinité, de framboise fraiche associées à une discrète pointe de cassis frais, à de fines pointes de boisé toasté, de chocolat ainsi qu’à une discrète pointe de cardamone. Les tannins sont fins et bien menés. Bonne longueur et bonne persistance aromatique sur de fines notes de cacao et de boisé caramélisé/noisette. La fin de bouche est très finement sèche.
