If 2021 was drier than previous years, two intense climatic episodes impacted the vintage.

The second is linked to the strong episodes of rain in June, with nearly 180 mm of precipitation.

Reviews for this vintage

B MY BORDEAUX, CHRISTER BYKLUM
88-90
Ruby. Blackberries, anise, blueberries, vanilla and spices nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, dark fruits, anise, liquorice, good length. May 2022

BERNARD BURTSCHY
92-93
July 2022

DECANTER

Gorgeous, concentrated and aromatic nose, full of blackcurrant and bramble fruits, slate, black pepper and plum. A delightful, searing freshness, juicy but pristine and not overly acidic. There's such a drive and focus of flavour, tight with tension and direction, the firm tannins so well integrated. Such an ease about this, lots of energy and approachability with a sweet, jammy and also cooling mint lift at the end. Concentrated all the way through. From a small 5.5ha estate, with a big proportion of Cabernet Franc in 2021. 10.2hl/ha. First year of conversion to organic farming. May 2022

FALSTAFF, PETER MOSER

Deep garnet, opaque core, purple reflections. Ripe plums, black cherries, nuances of fine wood spices, tobacco, candied orange zest. Medium-bodied, red cherry fruit, lean and fresh, lively acidity, mineral; offers uncomplicated drinking pleasure. May 2022

FORBES, TOM MULLEN

A 75/25 blend of Merlot/Cabernet Franc from 30-year-old vines that age 13 months in new French oak from 11 different coopers. Blueberries and red plums on the nose, as well as some blacktop and granite minerality. A juicy, light and easy drinking wine—a meld of young fresh red fruit midpalate, with clear acidity on the finish. Consider pairing with sashimi. 6,400 bottles produced annually. June 2022

GREAT BORDEAUX WINES, IZAK LITWAR

Crushed cherries, violets, grated milk chocolate, energetic, well-defined on the palate, tender, silky tannin and delicate finish. Seductive effort. July 2022

INSIDE BORDEAUX, JANE ANSON

As with its sibling property Fleur Cardinale, this is very much focused on the fruit, beautifully tart but juicy, with raspberry, redcurrant and crab apple fruit. Well textured, rippling with flavour, great quality if austere. May 2022

JAMES SUCKLING
91-92
A medium-bodied wine with black-olive and dark-fruit character. Creamy tannins. Soft and polished. May 2022

MARKUS DEL MONEGO

Intense purple colour with violet hue and black core. Expressive nose with ripe fruit, dark berries and juicy plums, hints of black olives and Mediterranean spices in the background. On the palate well balanced and structured with sweet fruit and a discreet spiciness, rather full-bodied with very good length. May 2022

THE WINE CELLAR INSIDER, JEFF LEVE

Flowers, chocolate, black cherries, and licorice notes are found in the nose. On the palate, the wine is soft, supple, sweet, fresh, and juicy with lift to the fruits and round, supple plums in the finish. May 2022

TIM ATKIN, ROD SMITH

Very rich and deep inviting sweet black fruit aromas. Bright black fruits, inviting and deep. Concentrated and powerful with great extract and depth, but managing elegance and structure. Delicious and well balanced fresh tannins and acidity. Really lovely this year. June 2022

VERT DE VIN, JONATHAN CHOUKROUN CHICHEPORTICHE
91-92
The nose is fruity and reveals a certain intensity, power with finesse, velvety aromatics. We find notes of boysenberry, violet and more slightly camphor combined with touches of morello cherry, star anise, a very discreet touch of sweet spices, nutmeg, caramelisation. The palate is nicely fresh, flowery, acidic and has minerality, acidic structure, good work with bitter taste, a nice freshness, energy, good definition, nice dynamics. On the palate this wine expresses fresh/juicy cherry, juicy redcurrant and slightly fresh blackcurrant notes combined with touches of fresh violet, small berry and slightly more aniseed, camphor, chocolate, fine toasted/hazelnut toastiness. Good length. The tannins are precise, fine and supple. Sweetness and finesse on the finish. June 2022

Le bouquet de Croix Cardinale 2021 est élégant et invitant au travers de nuances fruitées et épicées. En bouche, son caractère friand et souple confirme le côté invitant. Un vin gourmand, équilibré, bien soutenu par sa structure tannique. May 2022
