Weather conditions

Spring was warmer than normal, causing early flowering.

The summer that followed was relatively cool, and marked by a lack of sunshine.

On the other hand, the months of September and October were beautiful and sunny, with alternating hot days and cool nights, and we harvested at perfect ripeness.

Guide Hachette 2011, Septembre 2010La famille Decoster a vu ses efforts récompensés par l’accession de son domaine au titre de grand cru classé. Un bel exploit, réalisé en moins d’une décennie. Le vignoble est classique : terroir argilo-calcaire sur fonds rocheux, complanté de 75% Merlot 15% Cabernet Franc et 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Le vin, lui affiche un style plutôt moderne. Très coloré, il livre un bouquet déjà puissant de raisin bien mûr, de noisette. La bouche chaleureuse et dense prolonge bien le nez, s’appuyant sur des tanins jeunes, apéritifs et élégants. A découvrir d’ici quelques années.

Mai 2008Good bright ruby-red. Sexy nose offers black cherry, blackberry and a gamey nuance. Sweet and juicy, with an attractive layered texture and very good definition to the flavors of cherry, mocha and leather. Cooling acids contribute to the impression of shape and structure. Finishes juicy and long, if a bit youthfully brutal today. (A second sample was more pliant in the middle palate, and broader and sweeter on the back end.) This high-altitude, limestone-rich site, always picked late, is exactly the type of property that was able to take advantage of the favorable September and October weather in 2007.

July 2010Bright ruby-red. Ripe aromas of blackberry and licorice, with a violet topnote. A nicely sweet, pliant midweight, with good chewy texture and spines to its flavors of dark fruits, minerals, mocha and roasted meat. Finishes juicy and long, with sweet tannins, noteworthy length and a late hint of leather. A big success in the context of the vintage.

Le bouquet est ouvert avec des arômes de cerises mûres, de légère truffe noire, et des notes florales, de cassis, et d'élevage en arrière plan. Couleur noire. Nez intense. Notes fines de gelées de mûres. C’est à la fois mûr et frais. Très belle entrée en bouche. Le vin se développe ample, juteux, puissant, gras et aromatique. Je ne crois pas avoir connu ce cru aussi pulpeux et aussi minutieux dans ses appuis. La puissance s’estompe légèrement en fin de bouche, mais le goût et les tannins sont particulièrement bien définis. Il y a là du beau travail et une expression très originale de Saint-Emilion. Sûrement une très belle affaire en perspective.

A strong effort from this well-run estate, the 2007 Fleur Cardinale may turn out to be as good as the 2009, which is a slightly more ruggedly constructed and bigger wine, but not necessarily better. The 2007 is a mid-weight blend of 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Yields were only 35 hectoliters per hectare, and the wine hit 13.5% natural alcohol. Sweet black currant and blueberry fruit intermixed with spring flower, graphite, and subtle wood aromas are followed by an intense, richly fruity St.-Emilion with low acids, sweet, ripe tannins, and a lush, heady finish. It should drink beautifully for a decade or more. Drink 2010-2020. April 2010
