The beginning of the year was rainy and wet.

The weather conditions became perfect again at the end of August. Then an Indian summer stretched until the end of October and allowed us to optimize the maturity of the three grape varieties.

The year was particularly successful for the Cabernets Francs.

December 2019. Up to a full quarter of Cabernet Franc in this vintage, which may have helped bring the alcohol degree down a little. Gorgeous balance, juicy and rich, with blackberry and black cherry. It has plenty of St-Émilion signature, with a powerful gourmet edge as is so often the case with Fleur Cardinale but is elegant and in no way overdone. Flexible tannins, lovely texture; really a wine that is getting into its stride, and here the minerality is clearer, something that can get lost when alcohol levels creep up too high. What you get here instead, is a slightly raspy slate edge to the finish which is extremely moreish. Drinking Window 2020 - 2040

Just give it a few hours in a carafe to allow the aromatics to really open up. October 2021

April 2015The Château Fleur Cardinale 2014 is rich and decadent on the lavish nose (as it always is). One sample tasted at the Cercle de Rive Droite was more refined and focused than another sample tasted a day later in Saint Emilion. The palate is full-bodied and mirroring the aromatics, rich and extravagant on the palate. The acidity is well judged and there plenty of weight and presence towards the finish that I would suggest has more tension and precision the recent vintages. It’s an unashamedly modern style of Saint Emilion, but it feels as if it is reading from its own script instead of that of the terroir or the growing season. I prefer the La Croix Cardinale that demonstrates more articulation of its origin.

March 2017The 2014 Fleur Cardinale is located in Saint-Etienne-de-Lisse, the vines populating the lieu-dit of Thibaud. It has a powerful, rich and decadent bouquet bestowed with licorice and boysenberry jam. The palate is medium-bodied with muscular tannin, good depth, fine acidity with a structured and quite spicy finish that replicates the showing from barrel. Enjoy this over the next 8-10 years.

I find dark and lightly roasted plum and damson fruits here, with a little fresh coffee grounds mixed alongside. The palate has an immediate sense of creamed black fruits, with a plush, rather modern feel to it, textured, with an attractive acidity underneath. The midpalate is nicely filled out, hiding the ripe and lightly chewy tannins rather well. It certainly has balance, and is perhaps slightly dry in terms of structure, but this is a barrel sample that suggests some promise. April 2015

La bouche est fruitée, équilibrée, joliment onctueuse, joliment fraiche, élégante et offre une fine trame minérale, de la précision, une jolie matière ainsi que de la gourmandise. En bouche ce vin exprime des notes de mûre charnue, de framboise charnue et de fines notes de cassis, de prune associées à des pointes de chocolat, de boisé toasté, de réglisse ainsi qu’à de subtiles pointes d’épices douces, de thé Ceylan et de cardamone. Avril 2015The 2014 Fleur Cardinale was superb all three times I tasted it. Readers should expect a bold, modern-styled St.-Emilion built on opulence and richness. Black cherries, smoke, tobacco and new leather are all nicely delineated throughout. The late, October harvest and 100% new oak also contribute to the wine's super-ripe, voluptuous personality. The blend is 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon that saw a 5 day cold soak followed by 30-35 days on the skins.

Février 2017The 2014 Fleur Cardinale is a dark, sumptuous wine. Dark cherry, plum, rose petal, licorice and sweet spices are all pushed forward. Extravagantly ripe and flamboyant, the 2014 hits all the right notes. As always, Fleur Cardinale shows the more overt, opulent side of Saint-Émilion, and yet all the elements are beautifully balanced. Tasted two times.

Avril 2015Pourpre violacé. Bouquet marqué par son élevage, notes de mûre et de caramel. Attaque élégante en bouche. Caractère juteux, fruité. Le corps a de la densité et un caractère légèrement gras. Il gagnera en ampleur durant son élevage. Les tannins sont en mode intégration et se révèlent en fin de bouche. Ils demandent à s’assouplir mais rivalisent bien avec la structure. Cet ensemble offre un bel avenir à ce vin. 2019-2034.

Novembre 2016Rouge grenat moyen aux reflets violacés. Bouquet de bonne intensité, caractère fruité et épicé. Menthe, réglisse et framboises ainsi qu'une note de tourbe qui, bien évidemment m'emmène à Islay ! En bouche, l'attaque est équilibrée et fruitée. Le vin est équilibré et doté de tannins parfaitement intégrés. Ces derniers sont légèrement granuleux et de pair avec la structure. Un vin à laisser un petit peu de côté mais qui sera néanmoins déjà accessible dans sa jeunesse. 2019-2019.
